A credit war broke out over the Kanpur Metro project being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, with the Samajwadi Party saying the foundation stone of the project was laid during his tenure in 2016 in the presence of BJP leaders.

The Samajwadi Party presented a picture from October 2016 when the then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had laid the foundation stone of the project in the presence of the then Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and the then Kanpur BJP MP Murli Manohar Joshi. Incidentally, in 2016, too, there was a credit war over the project with the Samajwadi Party saying it was bringing the Metro to Kanpur, while the BJP gave the credit to then MP Murli Manohar Joshi.

BJP has now hit back saying that Akhilesh Yadav has a habit of claiming every project. “The construction of the project started on November 15, 2019, under the tenure of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the 9 km long first phase of the project was completed in a record tenure. BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla said that Kanpur Metro will be the fastest metro project in the country. The BJP said that the inauguration of the project took just 25 months since the work started.

The target is to complete two 32.5 km long corridors in Kanpur by December 2024. Metro projects are a partnership between the central and state government.

The BJP and the Samajwadi Party have been at loggerheads over credit over various projects being launched by the Prime Minister recently in Uttar Pradesh like Purvanchal Expressway, Noida International Airport, Kushinagar Airport and AIIMS Gorakhpur. The PM hit back at the SP saying that the party only believes in cutting ribbons while his government believes in executing projects on the ground.
