Cricket News LIVE: India eye strong comeback against Ireland, Cummins returns home

Cricket News Live: India will be keen to bounce back in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup when they take on Ireland after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to England in the previous outing. India know that a win will go a long way to continue their tournament run into the semi-finals.

India could not prevent India from posting a defendable score despite England being 29 for three at the start of their innings thanks to the brilliant bowling of Renuka Thakur who took five for 15. In reply, India were unable to chase down 152 runs.

The 11-run defeat means that they are most likely to finish second in Group B. Meanwhile, Ireland captain Laura Delany promised there is much more to come from her side as they end their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 campaign against India on Monday.

Delany’s side are winless from their first three matches, with a narrow defeat against the West Indies on Friday ensuring they could not qualify for the semi-finals.

It means that their tournament will end here at St George’s Park against an Indian team looking to bounce back from their loss to England.

India captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first One Day International against Australia in his hometown Mumbai on March 17 due to some family commitments.

Vice-captain Hardik Pandya, who led India in the last T20I series against New Zealand, will lead the ODI team in Rohit’s absence.

Pacer Jaydev Unadkat has returned to the team after a gap of nine years while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is still absent. Unadkat last played an ODI in November 2013 against the West Indies.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was also included in the squad by the selectors after he recovered from injury following his impressive bowling in the two Tests against Australia. Axar Patel and KL Rahul, who were rested for the New Zealand ODI, were also brought back as were KS Bharat and Shahbaz Ahmed.

Unadkat will be part of the pace battery led by Mohammed Shami and joined by Hardik Pandya along with Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Umran Malik, while Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Jadeja are the spinners.

In-form opener Shubman Gill, who scored a double hundred in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad, has joined Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav in the crucial series ahead of this year’s ODI World Cup in India.
