It looks like this will be a veil for Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, two senior Congress leaders from the state have told News18 on condition of anonymity. Speculation is also rife about the names of some other people to become the new Chief Minister of Punjab.

“The only thing that is clear is that now there is a curtain for Captain Amarinder Singh,” said a leader. Another leader also said the same, which was the reason why the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was called and two observers were also sent by the party high command from Delhi. “The CLP meeting was not called for so long. Now it has been called to replace the leader,” another Congress leader told News18.

Both the leaders, however, threw light on the speculation of a name change. “The first major task of the party is to resign the Captain. Don’t expect the fight to go down without him. The name of the replacement is known only to three members of the Gandhi family and no one else,” said the second leader. However he also said that it was common knowledge that the replacement should be a Sikh turban-wearing leader. “Experimenting on that count in Punjab may be difficult,” he said.

The leader said Arvind Kejriwal’s party lost in the last elections as AAP had not announced the name of a Sikh CM face at that time, which Kejriwal has promised to announce now. The first leader also said that it was “premature” to speculate as to who might be the replacement, but added that whoever comes forward will be bad news for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the Punjab elections. He said he was not in touch with the AICC or the party high command for several weeks.
