CWC will take responsibility for electoral defeat in 5 states, new elections will be announced soon: Sources

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will chair a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Sunday to take stock of the electoral debacle in five states. Sources said the CWC will take responsibility for the party’s defeat in the poll-bound states and the dates for fresh elections may be announced soon. The Grand Old Party has strongly denied media reports that claimed that Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would resign from the CWC on Sunday.

The CWC meeting will be held at the AICC office at 4 pm. Earlier, Sonia Gandhi will also preside over the meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Strategy Group at 10.30 am at 10 Janpath.

The apex decision-making body has decided to hold a meeting after the old party suffered a defeat in the assembly elections, with Punjab losing to AAP while recording a modest presence in the other four states.

G23 leaders, who have been demanding an organizational change, also met at senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s residence late Friday night and discussed their strategy ahead of the crucial CWC meeting.

Sunday’s meeting is likely to see some fireworks from the G23 side as they suggested remedial measures after the final round of assembly elections, when the party lost Puducherry and failed to make a mark in Kerala, Assam and West Bengal. But the high command had not done much on that front.

According to sources, in its meeting held on Friday, G23 discussed that there should be no further delay in the election of the new president of the party. Sources said that there is a need to fix accountability for the electoral defeat and there is an urgent need to change the composition of the CWC.

Senior Congress leaders Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari, Anand Sharma and Akhilesh Prasad Singh were among the G23 leaders who met at Azad’s residence, while some leaders attended virtually.

The results of assembly elections in five states were declared on March 10. The BJP swept to power in four of the five states, while the AAP made a huge upset defeating the Congress in Punjab.
