CWG 2022: PM Modi congratulates Achinta Shuli on winning gold

Indian lifter Achinta Shuli lifted 313 kg (143 kg, 170 kg) to win the gold, while her rival Malaysia’s Eri Hidayat Muhammad lifted 303 kg (138 kg (165 kg). Canada’s Shad Darsigny finished third with a total of 298 kg (135 kg (163 kg).

After making the country proud, Achinta Shuli told ANI, “I am very happy. After overcoming many struggles, I won this medal. I will dedicate this medal to my brother and coaches. After that I prepare for Olympics. I’ll do it.”

With Achinta Shuli’s gold, India has so far won a total of 3 gold medals in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Also, India won its sixth medal of the Games.

Delighted by her efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Achinta, “Glad that the talented Achinta Shuli has won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. He is known for his calm nature and tenacity. He worked hard for this remarkable achievement. My best wishes to him for his future endeavours.”

PM Modi also shared an old video of him interacting with Achint, hoping that he would get time to watch the film after winning the medal. In the video, PM Modi can be seen asking about Sheuly’s calm and focused demeanor, how the budding star loves movies but cannot watch them due to his busy schedule.

Modi later says that once the young athlete returns with a gold medal, he can watch movies, as he will have enough time to entertain himself.

President Draupadi Murmu also congratulated the young boy, “Achinta Shuli has made India proud by winning gold and raising the tricolor at the #CommonwealthGames. You quickly overcame failure in one attempt and rose to the top of the lineup. You are the champion who has created history. Hearty congratulations!”

Inspired by her elder brother Alok, Achinta Shuli started weightlifting in 2012. Achinta’s elder brother, Alok quit sports and started working as a laborer to support the family after his father passed away in 2014.

Achinta Shuli lost her father Prateek, a labourer, in April 2014. The elder brother Alok told that Achinta cried because he did not have money for the last rites of his father.

Achinta Shuli, a resident of Kolkata, was brought up in Deulpur, a two-hour bus ride from Howrah.
