CWG 2022: We will work on improving our performance, says Navneet Kaur after World Cup finish in 9th place

Indian women’s hockey team forward Navneet Kaur said on Thursday that India Will try to improve her performance in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 after finishing 9th in FIH Hockey Women World cup.

The Indian team started their World Cup campaign with a 1–1 draw against England. In their next match, they were held to a 1–1 draw by their Asian opponents, China. India’s final group stage match ended with a 3-4 loss to New Zealand.

India, despite finishing third in the group stage, had a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals if they could beat Spain in their crossover match. However, India missed out on a top 8 spot after a 0-1 loss to Spain.

Talking about India’s loss to Spain, Navneet Kaur said, “When we lost the match against Spain, we were completely disappointed, but we knew we had to leave that match quickly and The focus will have to be on the upcoming games against Canada and Japan.”

“The only thing we wanted was to register a good win against these two teams and end our World Cup campaign on a positive note,” he continued.

In their 9th–16th place game, India beat Canada 2–3 via a shootout after drawing 1–1 at the end of regulation time. After that, India finished the tournament in 9th place in the final standings after beating Japan 3-1 in a 9th-12th place match at the Estadi Olympique de Terrassa on Wednesday night.

“I think we could have done even better against Canada and not let the match go into a shootout. But we missed many chances in the circle. Against Japan, it was important that we improved our chances and we got them out of the word,” said Kaur.

Navneet Kaur was the best performer for India against Japan as she put on a brace and speaking about the same, she said, “I am glad that I could contribute to the team’s result. There are many takeaways from the matches we’ve played in WC. We will work on improving our performance in the Commonwealth Games.

India will start its Commonwealth Games campaign against Ghana on July 29.
