Cyber Security: Here are 5 Ways to Identify Fake Websites

New Delhi: India’s cyber security agency, CERT-In is celebrating ‘Cyber Security Awareness Month October 2022’ to create awareness and sensitize internet users about security against cyber attacks, frauds and cyber crimes. The theme of this year’s awareness month is “See Yourself in Cyber”.

With digitization and access to the Internet, cyber security is a major challenge for India and its citizens. Fraudsters are using simple and creative methods to trap innocent people and extract their money from the accounts. As an awareness programme, CERT-In has shared various methods to identify fake websites.

Here are 5 steps given by CERT-In to identify fake websites:

1. Type the website’s address into the search engine and review the results. The address bar contains important information. Always check the URL before you browse/buy/register

2. Look at the webiste’s connection type and make sure the website connects securely over HTTPS, not HTTP.

3. Verify website certificates and trust seals. Always check SSL authentication to confirm its validity. Trust seals are usually put on the homepage, login page and checkout page.

4. Check out the bad English on the site. If you see a large number of poorly spelled (or missing) words, usually poor grammar, or strange phrases, you should question the genuineness of the site.

5. Beware of aggressive advertising. If your selected site has a surprisingly large number of ads that are crowding the page, or ads that automatically play audio, it probably isn’t a reliable site.
