Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d 4MATIC, SUV Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of Tata Sons The Sunday ride comes with various safety features to protect the passengers, including the rear seat belt, which apparently was not being used by the unlucky car occupants.

54-year-old Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole died in an accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Sunday.

Anahita Pandole, 55, who was driving the 2017 version of the SUV, and her husband Darius Pandole, 60, were seriously injured.

The 2017 GLC 220d 4MATIC comes with a total of seven airbags. The car has no front-facing airbags for the rear passengers and only curtain airbags on the sides.

And like any other car, the airbags are ‘SRS’ or supplementary restraint systems. The primary restraint system on cars remains the seat belt.

Therefore, the use of seat belts is crucial for the safety of rear passengers, whether they are traveling in entry-level models or high-end luxury cars like the Mistry, industry experts said.

It appears that Mistry was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown in front of him at a very high speed once the speeding car hit the divider.

A police official said that according to preliminary investigation, the accident occurred due to over speeding and an “error of judgment” by the driver.

According to officials, both Mistry and Jehangir Pandole, who were sitting behind, were not wearing seat belts. Officials have noted that prima facie the luxury car was speeding when the accident took place on Sunday afternoon.

According to police officials, the Mercedes car covered a distance of 20 km in just nine minutes after crossing Charoti check post in Palghar district of Maharashtra, 120 km from Mumbai.

The car collided with a road divider on the bridge over the Surya river, killing Mistry and Jehangir Pandole on the spot. Mistry was returning to Mumbai from Udvada near Valsad when the accident happened.

The car was being driven by Mumbai-based gynecologist Anahita Pandole.

Elaborating on the importance of wearing seat belts, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra tweeted on Monday, “I pledge to always wear my seat belt even in the back seat of the car. And I urge all of you to do the same. Take that pledge too. We are all indebted to our families for this.” The latest variant of the all wheel drive GLC 220d 4MATIC comes with a price tag of above ₹68 lakhs. It has a ‘Pre-Safe System’ where the front seat belt can be electrically extended in dangerous situations.

According to the Mercedes-Benz India website, the GLC’s Pre-Safe system minimizes the forward displacement of riders while braking or skidding in an imminent accident.

In addition, the knee-bag in the model protects the legs from contact with the steering column or dashboard in a serious frontal accident to prevent or reduce the severity of injuries. It also has a tire pressure monitoring system that provides warnings in the event of a drop in pressure.
