DA Increase: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s cabinet has approved a proposal to increase dearness allowance by 5 per cent with effect from July 1. Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushant Choudhary said that the hike in dearness allowance for state government employees and pensioners has been approved.

The decision has been taken in view of the assembly elections in the northeastern state to be held in March next year.

“The council of ministers has approved a proposal to give 5 per cent DA to its employees despite the paucity of resources. The government will have to bear the additional annual burden of Rs 523.80 crore,” Choudhary told reporters on Tuesday night.

A total of 1,88,494 people will be benefitted including 1,04,683 regular employees and 80,855 pensioners.

With this decision, the DA of state government employees has increased from three percent of their basic salary to eight percent. But the central government employees are getting 34 per cent of the basic salary as DA and there is a 26 per cent gap between the central and state government employees.

The Tripura Government Employees Federation (TGEF) has welcomed the decision.

TGEF general secretary Samar Roy said, “We welcome the government’s decision to hike DA by 5 per cent but the gap with the central government employees is still huge. We are hopeful that the state government will reduce it.”

Choudhary also said that 200 engineers would be recruited in the Public Works Department through the Tripura Public Service Commission.

He said that engineering students passed from civil, mechanical and electrical subjects would be eligible.

The minister said that soon 100 staff nurses, 22 pharmacists and 39 laboratory assistants would also be recruited in the health department.
