Daimler AG’s truck business, the world’s largest, has tightened supplies of vital chips in recent weeks, the division’s chief executive said in a Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung report. “Since the summer months the situation has again intensified,” Martin Daum told the weekly newspaper, adding that production was affected in Germany and the United States. Excerpts from the interview were made available the Friday before being published on Sunday.

Daum said that the order books were filled, but the shortages of all the major carmakers had led to a huge increase in the stock. “There is a significant inventory of already manufactured vehicles where there is a shortage of essential parts. Those vehicles are in great need of our customers. We want to deliver but we are waiting for parts.”

Daum said supply tightening could have a major impact on unit sales in the third quarter, adding that there are no signs of a quick recovery and the issue will remain with the sector for some time.

Daimler Truck Holding AG will be spun off from Daimler later this year, with shareholders scheduled to vote on the move at an extraordinary general meeting on October 1. Daimler, in turn, would be renamed Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
