The conference, which was attended by around 250 madrassas of the state, was addressed by Maulana Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and Maulana Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani, the rector of the madrassa.

Addressing the media, Mr. Madani said that madrasas or Muslims, had no objection to the survey being conducted by the Yogi Adityanath government and the doors of madrasas were open to all. There is nothing to fear or panic in the picture of the survey that has come out so far.

Reiterating that madrassas played an important role in the freedom movement, Mr. Madani appealed to the directors of madrasas to “cooperate in the survey as we have nothing to hide.”

The senior Islamic scholar said that as much as the community needs doctors and engineers, it also needs clerics and muezzins to serve in mosques across the country.

On the funding of madrasas, Madani said, Muslims take government help in worldly matters. “We don’t want government support in running mosques and madrassas… in matters of religion.”

Responding to a question on education in madrasas, Mr. Madani said that Darul Uloom was working with the government to streamline education in madrassas, and in the next five to seven years, the madrasa would admit only those who had Was 10th pass. th Standard from a recognized Board of Education.

Shri Nomani said that the madrassas are being run in accordance with the freedom of thought, belief and religion guaranteed by the Constitution. He advised the management of madrasas to maintain transparency in financial matters and get their accounts audited.

Earlier, Maulana Mufti Shukat Bastavi, the head of Rabta Madaris-e-Islamia Arab, said that madrassas played an important role in preserving Islamic heritage and overthrowing British colonial rule. “On the one hand we have fulfilled the religious needs of the largest minority in the country and on the other we have made responsible citizens of the country.”

He said that madrassas have consistently raised their voice against terrorism and helped in providing education to the poorest section of the society. “Intelligence agencies are free to investigate these madrassas.
