The NFHS-5 (2019-21) data showed that nearly two-thirds of the households in Uttar Pradesh and nearly half in Rajasthan faced the scorching heat this summer without an air-conditioner or air-cooler. In fact, only 15% of households in rural India owned one of these, while in urban areas ownership was much better at around 40%. The data also showed that only 7.5% of the households have Vehicle, while 50% have a cycle. Ironically, cycle lanes are rare in India. Notably, only 16% of households have a television, a refrigerator and a washing machine – indicating that all three are still luxuries.

How many Indians have bikes?

About 50% of Indian households own a motorized two wheeler. Punjab tops the list, with 75% of households having a bike, while the northeastern states have the least.

More than half of Indian households have a bicycle. Bicycle ownership was relatively high in the eastern, northern and north-eastern parts of the country
