David Beckham Has Tried For Years To Get Approval For Miami Stadium For His Major League Soccer Team

David Beckham’s long-awaited stadium plan for his Major League Soccer team has received significant approval from lawmakers who have begun construction of Inter Miami’s new home.

City commissioners approved a zoning plan Tuesday night by a 4-1 vote, turning the land next to Miami International Airport into a stadium complex with a hotel, shops and restaurants, setting the stage for the development of Miami Freedom Park .

Former England and Manchester United star Beckham, who has tried for years to get clearance for Miami Stadium, and billionaire co-owner George Maas will pay for construction and land work at the site.

The commissioners had earlier this year approved a 99-year lease on public land.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez tweeted, “I want to thank our commission for their continued support for the best sports deals to achieve a multi-billion dollar win for Miami residents using zero taxpayer dollars. “

“A new park, an @MLS stadium, and thousands of new jobs coming soon… The future of football is in Miami.”

Inter Miami now plays in nearby Fort Lauderdale, but will be the major tenant in the $1 billion stadium project, including a 25,000-seat stadium, offices and a public park.
