Davis Cup: Andy Murray misses out rising star Jack Draper in UK squad

Andy Murray has been included in Britain’s Davis Cup squad for the group stage of next month’s competition in Glasgow but there is no place for rising star Jack Draper yet.

Murray joins Cameron Norie, Dan Evans and world doubles number one Joe Salisbury for Britain’s matches against the United States, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

Murray experienced turmoil in 2022 after reaching the final at ATP Stuttgart, but failed to advance past Wimbledon’s second round after losing to John Isner and first round exits in Washington and Montreal.

Twenty-year-old Draper has moved up 55th out of the top 250 in this season’s rankings, but Murray, who is up eight places, was allowed on Monday to provide singles competition to Wimbledon semifinalist Norie and 23rd-ranked Evans.

A fifth player will be added later, giving Draper another chance to stake his claim with doubles specialist Neil Skupski, who won his sixth title of the season with Dutch teammate Wesley Koolhof in Montreal on Sunday.

Murray will be playing in the competition for the first time since 2019, having missed the most recent edition last November when Britain lost to Germany in the quarter-finals.

With Britain playing their matches on 14, 16 and 18 September, they are guaranteed a hero’s welcome at home.

The DPA quoted Murray as saying, “It’s always special to play a Davis Cup match in front of a home audience.

“Some of the best moments of my career have been representing my country in the Davis Cup, so being part of the team again means a lot. Obviously, it is exciting that the competition is returning to Glasgow. We have had some great results in the past and this is another chance for us to create even more history. We have a strong team and we will do everything possible to win our fans and make it to the finals.”

Nori overthrew Murray as British No. 1 and made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the first time before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. It hasn’t all gone the 26-year-old’s way, though he was recently defeated in the Canadian Open quarterfinals by Felix Auger-Aliassim.

“Coming into the Davis Cup as British No. 1 – it doesn’t get better than that,” he explained.
