Death of a paramedical student of AIIMS, comrades imposed negligence on administration, protest demonstration

paramedical students all India Following the death of an optometry student, the Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) staged a protest here on Saturday against the hospital administration.

The agitating students claimed that the death was due to the negligence of the hospital administration.

Students say that if the administration had provided them hostels in the hospital premises itself, the student’s life could have been saved.

The deceased Abhishek Malviya was a first year optometry student. Three days back he had complained of suffocation and shortness of breath. When his friends sought help, the hospital authorities reportedly refused an ambulance, saying Malviya was not a hostel and such services should not be extended to students living outside the hospital premises.

It took Malviya 2-3 hours to reach the AIIMS emergency, where he was declared critical, after which he was shifted to the new private ward of the hospital. He was later diagnosed with H1N1 (influenza) and when he was put on ECMO his lungs got worse.

“When the doctors declared him brought dead the next morning, they said he had multiple lung infections, including influenza, Covid-19 and bacterial infections. He was on ECMO for artificial lung activity,” the Optometry Students Association of AIIMS said in a statement.

Every year, AIIMS conducts the entrance exam for paramedical UG courses, in which optometry occupies a major part of the seat. But from the 2020 batch onwards, the hospital started denying basic UG facilities like hostel accommodation to paramedical UG students on the ground of lack of hostel for MBBS students, the association said.

“If there were hostels for us, Malviya would have survived. All this happened due to the negligence of AIIMS administration and it may happen to others in future also.

It said, we seek assurance from the AIIMS administration to stay in the hostel so that such tragic incidents do not recur in future.
