BEIJING: The death toll from a strong earthquake in southwest China has risen to 82, state media reported on Thursday, as rain and possible landslides threaten the search for dozens of missing people.

The China Youth Daily reported that workers rushed hundreds of kilometers to repair electrical and optical cables, allowing communication to be “basically restored” in the affected areas.
Local authorities have so far received more than 100 million yuan ($1.4 million) in disaster relief donations, the report said.
The quake also shook buildings in the provincial capital Chengdu – where millions are confined to their homes covid-19 lockdown – and in the nearby megacity Chongqing, residents told AFP.
