‘Debt-ridden’ man arrested for trying to extort money from South Delhi builder

A man has been arrested for allegedly sending threatening messages to a builder in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash-1 and demanding ₹2 crore.

Police said on Friday that Bhupendra, a resident of Mehrauli, was arrested on Wednesday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the builder on May 10.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary said a case was registered under IPC section 507 on the builder’s complaint and section 384 was added after the arrest.

The accused disclosed that he and his family were in debt for the last three years. He is a heart patient and has undergone bypass surgery. He needed money to pay his medical bills. Hence, he targeted the complainant, a renowned builder,” said the DCP.

He said that a team traced and arrested the accused on the basis of technical surveillance, CCTV footage analysis as well as inputs from former employees of the complainant.
