Theater and Yakshagana artists of Udupi had long been demanding a full-fledged district-level theater in the district, given the fact that the performing arts needed permanent shelter as the region received rains for more than six months. Is.

As Kannada and Culture Minister V. Sunil Kumar himself pointed out on 2 October, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, despite being culturally vibrant, are among the 13 districts that do not have a district-level Rangamandir. Its general secretary Pradipchandra Kuthpadi said that members of the Rangbhoomi (registered), one of the district’s major theater groups, often felt frustrated during their tours whenever they saw a full-fledged theater elsewhere.

The late Anand Ganiga of Rangbhoomi and others, the then district in-charge minister late VS Acharya and MLA K. Raghupati Bhat was appealed to build a Rang Mandir for the district. Acharya and Mr. Bhat had announced a sanction of Rs 50 lakh for the Rangamandir when they were paying their last respects to Ganiga. Then Kannada and Culture Minister CT Ravi during his visit to Udupi asked the manufacturing center to prepare a blueprint for the theatre.

Bidinagudde, which was initially suggested, was found to be inadequate and efforts were made to identify a new location. Shri Kuthapadi said that along with the change of government, the then MLA Pramod Madhavraj laid the foundation stone of Rang Mandir at Adi Udupi at the hands of the then Kannada and Culture Minister Jayamala.

However, the process was stalled until the current Kannada and Culture Minister V. Sunil Kumar, who hails from Udupi district, took special interest and sanctioned ₹5 crore for the project, releasing ₹2.5 crore.

Thanking the Minister, Shri Kuthpady said that the project should be completed in a time bound manner so that the artistes in the district get a place to showcase their talent.
