‘Decision taken with a heavy heart’: BJP on suspension of 19 Rajya Sabha MPs, opposition running away from dispute

The opposition on Tuesday created a ruckus after 19 of its MPs were suspended for the entire week for repeatedly obstructing the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha. The BJP said the decision was taken with a “heavy heart” as the punished members repeatedly ignored Deputy Speaker Harvansh’s appeal to allow the Upper House of Parliament to function.

Speaking on the same, Union Minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal told reporters that it is not the central government but the opposition parties that are not allowing the House to debate. The BJP leader also said that the Center is ready to discuss inflation after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has fully recovered from the COVID-19 infection and attended the proceedings of Parliament.

He appealed to the opposition to participate in the parliamentary proceedings, saying, “India has dealt with inflation and price rise better than many countries, and the government will inform the Parliament about the important steps taken to handle the price rise.” Eager to inform.”

Union Minister V Muraleedharan today moved a motion to suspend 10 MPs from the Rajya Sabha meeting for their “misconduct” showing “absolute disregard for the authority of the House and Chair”. However, Harivansh read out the names of 19 members when the motion was moved for voice vote.

When some opposition members demanded division of votes, the Speaker said that he would do so if the members returned to their seats. On the MPs’ refusal to comply with the orders, he said it seemed he was not interested in the division and announced that the motion had been accepted.

The suspended MPs refused to sit on the floor of the House, leading to three adjournments – first by Harivansh for 15 minutes, then for an hour, and finally, by Bhuvneshwar Kalita, who was in the chair.

The suspended MPs include Sushmita Dev, Mausam Noor, Shanta Chhetri, Dola Sen, Shantanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Biswas and Nadimul Haque from TMC; DMK K M Mohammed Abdullah, Kanimozhi NVN Somu, M Shanmugam, S Kalyanasundaram, R Girirajan and NR Elango; B Lingaiah Yadav, Ravichandra Vadiraju and Damodar Rao Divakonda from TRS; V Sivadasan and A.A. from CPI-M. Rahim; and Santosh Kumar from CPI.

However, opposition members continued to protest in the Well of the House, following which Kalita adjourned the Rajya Sabha for the day.
