Defense Ministry orders ₹7,523 crore for 118 tanks for Indian Army

Ministry of Defense has given an order 7,523 crore for the purchase of 118 Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun for the Indian Army. The Ministry of Defense has placed an order for the supply of 118 Arjun Mk-1A tanks to Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai. According to the Defense Ministry, the tank has been designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which includes several upgrades over the Arjun MBT, which is an in-service main battle tank. About Arjun Mk-1A Tank

The MBT Mk-1A is a new variant of the Arjun tank which is designed to enhance firepower, maneuverability and survivability, according to the ministry. The tank has 71 new features and has more indigenous material than the Mk-1 variant.

The Defense Ministry said that the Mk-1 Arjun tank can engage the enemy in day and night conditions and in both static and dynamic modes.

“The MK-1A is equipped with precision and superior firepower, all-terrain maneuverability, and unstoppable multi-layered defense provided by an array of advanced technology systems. It can engage the enemy during day and night conditions and in both static and dynamic can compete mode,” the ministry said.

It said that the MBT Arjun Mk-1A has been designed and developed by Combat Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) along with other laboratories of DRDO within two years (2010-12).

The ministry said the production order to the heavy vehicle factory in Chennai will open up a huge opportunity in defense manufacturing to over 200 Indian vendors, including MSMEs, with employment opportunities for around 8,000 people.
