Delhi: Brain dead patient donated lungs, heart, kidney and liver to 5 people

AIIMS Delhi on Saturday successfully performed the second lung transplant of a woman. A 50-year-old woman received new lungs today, making it the second lung transplant procedure to be performed at the premier institution in less than three months.

Deepak Gupta, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery AIIMS said that for the first time in the institute itself, the lungs of a 36-year-old man, who was declared brain dead, were harvested, and were successfully transplanted.

The doctor said that the heart, liver and kidney of the brain dead patient were also removed, giving new life to four others.

AIIMS Delhi became the second public hospital in the country after PGIMER Chandigarh to undergo the lung transplant procedure in May this year.

The entire process of organ extraction and transplantation started at 11.30 pm on Friday and lasted till Saturday afternoon.

“In the majority of cases in the past, the lungs were not medically suitable for transplantation. But here, evaluation showed that the lungs were in good condition and thus were harvested and transplanted into a 50-year-old female patient with interstitial lung disease in the institute,” said Dr. Milind Hota, Professor of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at AIIMS.

Dr Anant Mohan, Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders at the institute said that the recipient is under observation in the post-operative ICU after the procedure.

“She had been waiting for a lung transplant for over a year,” he said.

Amresh Chand, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, had suffered a severe head injury when he was hit by an auto rickshaw near Jaitpur here on July 27.

He was taken to a trauma center and operated on, but was declared brain dead the next day.

A team of doctors and transplant coordinators at AIIMS, New Delhi advised his family members to donate their organs.

“It is very sad to see a young life being lost like this. An irreparable loss to Amresh’s family, but his desire to donate his organs and light the lives of others is a testimony to the fact that in dark times Even good wins,” Dr. Vij said.

Apart from lungs, a patient was given Amresh’s heart at the Army Research and Referral Hospital.

Dr Sujoy Pal, Professor, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at AIIMS, said that his liver was transplanted in a patient suffering from liver cancer.

Of the two kidneys, one was transplanted in a patient at AIIMS, while the other was given to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

Amresh Chand was declared brain dead at 8:50 pm on the night of 28 July.

His brother-in-law Mahendra Kumar said, “The deceased Amaresh used to manage agriculture in his village and worked as a daily wage laborer in Delhi.”
