Delhi civic polls: AAP’s first list released

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday released its first list of 134 candidates for the upcoming municipal elections. The party may announce the names of its remaining 116 candidates on Saturday.

“More than 20,000 party workers had applied for tickets to contest the MCD elections,” the party said in a statement. It also said that the AAP conducted a survey and took feedback from people before finalizing the name.

The party also said it gave 90% of its tickets to “old party workers”, such as Vikas Goyal – who served as the Leader of the Opposition in the then North Delhi Municipal Corporation – who will contest from the Keshav Puram ward. In the 2017 civic elections, Mr Goyal contested and won from the Wazirpur ward, which is now reserved for women candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

Similarly, Wajid Khan, former councilor of Abul Fazal Enclave ward, has also got the party’s approval to contest from the same seat. After the recent delimitation exercise, the number of municipal wards in the capital has come down to 250 from the previous 272. The MCD elections will be held on December 4 and the results will be declared on December 7.
