Delhi Liquor Policy Case: Serious allegations on Sisodia in CBI remand, talk of ‘active role’

Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who was arrested a day earlier for corruption in excise policy, was sent to CBI custody for five days on Monday by the court. In CBI’s remand, serious allegations have been leveled against the copy deputy CM. Like he played an active role in the scam and took advantage of the liquor policy behind Maqsood liquor traders. Keeping his side, Sisodia’s lawyer told the court, “I am the Finance Minister. I have to present the budget… What changed yesterday that the Finance Minister has been detained? Will he not get ahead? Or was this detail done for the purpose of excuse? This case is an attack on an individual and an institution.” “It is a fit case for denial of remand,” he said. He submitted that Sisodia acted as a member of the Delhi government and was, therefore, subject to judgment. They cannot be held responsible, nor can that decision be questioned.

The counsel for the investigating agency has claimed that there is a need for custodial interrogation of the arrested Deputy Chief Minister. The CBI said that Sisodia claimed that he had no role in the case, but the probe revealed that he was personally there to take the decision. Sisodia’s counsel filed the plea opposing his request for production of the AAP leader in CBI custody, saying the CBI has said he was in exchange of your mobile phone, but it is not an offence.

The lawyer said that the policy was implemented after taking suggestions from the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and since it required consultation, there was no possibility of conspiracy. “I tried to put everything in the open,” he said. In the court, Sisodia’s senior advocates D. Krishnan, Mohit Mathur and Siddharth Agarwal did. The agency told the court that further investigation is on in the matter. Earlier this month, the CB had interrogated another Delhi government minister Satyendar Jain in Tihar Jail in connection with the case after taking permission from the judge.

Jain is in Tihar Jail in connection with a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He is not involved in excise policy matter. The CBI did not cooperate with the interrogation of 26 graders and told them not to answer questions correctly. The Aam Aadmi Party similarly demonstrated against the arrest of Sisodia. A large number of AAP leaders and accountants demonstrated at the Delhi AAP headquarters. Apart from this, AAP workers in Bhopal, Jammu, Chandigarh and Hyderabad were seen roaming around for posters. The CBI had arrested Sisodia on Sunday evening in connection with alleged corruption in the implementation of the 2021-22 Excise Policy (now cancelled). During the hearing in the court which lasted for over an hour, Sisodia’s counsel said that the Lt Governor had approved the exposure policy in the excise policy, but the central probe agency is after the elected government. The AAP leader’s lawyer argued, “I cannot take any decision.” It has to be approved by a suitable resolution.” Sisodia claimed there was no evidence against him and opposed the CBI’s request for his remand.
