Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi and Aale Mohammad Iqbal won their second term as mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi after their rivals Shikha Rai and Soni Pal withdrew their candidature on Wednesday.

The AAP on Wednesday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying its Delhi unit has embarrassed not only itself but the entire party by withdrawing the nomination of its mayoral candidate.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi and Aale Mohammad Iqbal won their second term as mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi after their rivals Shikha Rai and Soni Pal withdrew their candidature on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj Bhardwaj criticized the BJP’s decision to participate in the election despite not having enough councilors to support its candidate.

Pointing out how shameful this defeat is for the BJP, he said that either they should have decided not to contest the elections or should have had the courage to fight.

“On one hand, the BJP decides to contest the elections and declares its candidates, but when the time comes to fight, it surrenders. That too she surrendered shouting in front of the media that her party has The numbers are there and the mayor will do it.” Belongs to the BJP,” Bhardwaj, who is also Delhi’s urban development minister, said.

“Therefore, I think today is a day of shame for the entire BJP. Their Delhi unit has not only embarrassed itself, but has also embarrassed the national unit of the party,” he added.

However, the Delhi BJP said it has decided to withdraw the nomination as “despite our best efforts, you are not ready to make the MCD functional by allowing the formation of standing committees and ward committees”.

Bhardwaj accused the BJP of trying to buy corporators right from the time his candidate was nominated for the post of mayor and said it showed their desperation to win at any cost.

He said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is working towards improving the status of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the recent victory in the mayoral elections has strengthened the position of the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. He said he has promised to make the civic body corruption-free and improve the living conditions of the residents.

“We would like to thank the residents of Delhi and inform them that the development works initiated by Dr. Shaili Oberoi in MCD will now gain further momentum and these works will be completed at the earliest after the formation of the Standing Committee.” ” They said.

The mayoral election in Delhi was seen as a direct contest between the incumbent Oberoi and Rai.
