Delhi Mayor Election Live Updates: AAP and BJP corporators clash inside Civic Center

This will be the first Delhi MCD mayoral election after the redrawing of wards.

New Delhi:

Before the swearing-in ceremony at the MCD Civic Centre, AAP and BJP corporators entered the Well and raised slogans. When the presiding officer and BJP councilor Satya Sharma started administering oath to the nominated BJP members in front of the elected councilors of AAP, the councilors started protesting.

The AAP has slammed the Delhi LG’s move to appoint BJP councilor Satya Sharma as temporary speaker, claiming that he “skewed” the civic body in favor of the BJP.

Delhi will get its next mayor today, a month after a high-stakes battle for control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi saw the ruling Aam Aadmi Party defeat the BJP after three terms in power.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP has fielded Shaili Oberoi against BJP’s Shalimar Bagh corporator Rekha Gupta for the top post in the civic body.

The Congress has said it will not participate in the elections, choosing not to support either the AAP or the BJP.
