Delhi Metro halted 3 times a week – eagle, mountain of garbage is the reason

Delhi: The mountain of garbage in Ghazipur has become a big problem for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The Blue Line of Delhi Metro is getting affected frequently due to the eagles hovering around the Ghazipur landfill.

Last Monday, Delhi Metro services were affected after a high voltage wire collided between Yamuna Bank and Yamuna Bank. indraprastha metro stationThis caused a lot of trouble to the passers-by.

Two days later, an eagle dropped a piece of cable on the wire, affecting metro service.

According to a report by Live Hindustan, the sister publication of Livemint, birds have become a major problem for the Delhi Metro. In 2017, Delhi Metro tried to tackle this issue by installing spikes discs. An official told the daily that German technology has successfully solved the problem, but the increase in the number of eagles is cause for concern. DMRCEspecially at Yamuna Bank and Indraprastha stations.

Delhi Metro officials told Live Hindustan that eagles hovering around the Ghazipur landfill cross the Yamuna in search of water, as a result of which they often come in contact with the Metro’s high voltage wires.

There is currently no technology globally to prevent birds from hitting power lines, the official said. However, DMRC is engaged in assessing the sudden wire break.

Delhi Metro: Reasons for affected services

1. Birds: Sometimes the catenary wire gets broken due to the collision of the bird, thereby affecting the services.

2. Signal problem: A malfunction in signaling in a particular section of a metro line results in loss of communication with the control room, forcing the train to operate manually.

3. Loss of Train ID: Metro train sets have an ID number at the time of operation. When the ID of a train is lost, its display in the control room stops.

4. Other reasons: If any metal, cloth etc. falls on the wires of any metro corridor (high part), it causes brake on the speed.

Delhi Metro: How can the problem of birds be solved

1. Delhi Metro had installed Spike Disc in 2017. It is mounted on an insulator cap on the pole so that birds cannot nest there. More than 2000 spike discs have been installed in Phase I and II of Delhi Metro.

2. A dangler is technically a circular shape with colored paper on it. It has been installed on pillars at various places in metro stations and elevated areas. Experts say that the danger reflects to the bird and hence they shy away from it.

3. Bird Nets: To deter birds, Delhi Metro has also used nets at Indraprastha and Yamuna Bank stations. These traps have also been installed at stations like Karol Bagh and RK Ashram.
