Delhi: Orange alert issued for ‘severe heat wave’ today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Sunday (April 10) as severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue in the national capital.
According to the IMD, Delhi recorded a temperature of 42.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday (April 9), the hottest day in five years.
Earlier, the maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 43.2 degree Celsius on April 21, 2017. The highest maximum temperature of the month was recorded on April 29, 1941 at 45.6 °C.
The IMD said in its warning that for the first time in 72 years, Delhi has recorded such a high temperature in the first fortnight of April.
IMD uses four color codes for weather warnings – green (no action required), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).
In the plains, a ‘heatwave’ is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees above normal.
According to the IMD, if the departure from normal temperature is more than 6.4 degrees, a ‘severe heat wave’ is declared.
The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung monitoring station on Friday (April 8) was 41.6 degree Celsius.
Similarly, neighboring Gurugram recorded a maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius, which was 10 degrees above the average. The highest ever recorded maximum temperature was 44.8 degree Celsius in Gurugram on April 28, 1979.
The maximum temperature in Haryana’s Faridabad was 45.2 degrees Celsius.
