Delhi received the highest rainfall in January in 32 years, the fall in maximum temperature is the lowest of the season

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi has recorded nearly 70 mm of rain in January this year, the highest in the month in the last 32 years, on Saturday. A senior IMD official said Delhi recorded 69.8 mm of rain till 9.30 pm on Saturday.

He said this was the highest since January 1989 when the capital had received 79.7 mm of rain. According to the IMD, Saturday’s rain brought down the maximum temperature to 14.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches below the average and the lowest temperature of the season so far.

The Safdarjung observatory, which is considered the city’s official marker, had recorded 5 mm of rain till 8 am on Saturday. The IMD said the minimum temperature was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

IMD had said that due to western disturbances, widespread rainfall is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan from January 21 to January 23. The Met Office said that the relative humidity was recorded at 84 per cent at 5.30 pm. The Meteorological Department has predicted a generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 16 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Delhi’s air quality was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category on Saturday. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed that the 24-hour air quality index (AQI) stood at 316 at 4 pm. The AQIs of Faridabad (330) and Gurgaon (304) were also recorded in the ‘very poor’ category. While neighboring Ghaziabad (287), Greater Noida (260) and Noida (277) recorded AQI in the “poor” category.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”. .
