Delhi rain: Rain and storm leads to traffic jam in national capital

New Delhi:

Heavy rain and thunderstorm lashed Delhi and its adjoining areas this morning causing heavy traffic jams and affected flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

Trees were uprooted in parts of the national capital and traffic jams were reported in various parts near ITO, DND and AIIMS on the first working day of the week.

According to the Meteorological Department, it was the first moderate-intensity storm of this season.

Between 5:40 am to 7 am, the city’s temperature dropped by 11 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius, news agency ANI quoted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as saying.

The airport authorities have requested passengers to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.

Delhi airport tweeted, “Due to bad weather, flight operations at Delhi airport have been affected. Passengers are requested to contact the concerned airline for updated flight details.”

Airline companies tweeted that inclement weather in Delhi could affect departure and arrival at the airport as they requested their passengers to check their flight status.

In an earlier tweet, the IMD said that weak structures and raw Houses may be damaged due to thunderstorms, and traffic is likely to be disrupted.

It has also predicted rain and thundershowers of moderate intensity with speed of 60-90 km/h over entire Delhi and NCR and adjoining areas during the next two hours.

Strong winds and heavy rains uprooted trees in parts of Delhi, blocking roads.

Several people on Twitter have posted tweets about their experiences this morning.
