Delhi: Water supply to be disrupted from tomorrow

Water supply in Delhi will be affected from tomorrow morning due to receding of water level in Delhi’s Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla ponds. And the services will remain affected till the level of the pond improves.

Delhi Jal Board, in a recent notification, said due to reduction in the level of Yamuna pond at Wazirabad Water Works as against normal level and reduction in release of raw water by Haryana into Yamuna river, from water treatment plants at Wazirabad, Chandrawal. The Delhi Jal Board further said that water supply will remain affected from the morning of May 17 and till the level of the pond becomes normal.

Delhi sends SOS to Haryana government

Last week, the Delhi government sent an SOS to the Haryana government – for the third time in two weeks, urging it to release water into the Yamuna river to prevent water crisis. Water services have been affected in many parts of the city due to this crisis.

An official informed, “Haryana is releasing less water into the river, due to which the water level of Wazirabad pond has dropped to 671.80 feet as against the normal level of 674.5 feet. Many areas of Delhi may face water shortage. is. “.

Apart from this, the SOS also mentioned that the flow through CLC (carrier-lined channel) and DSB (Delhi sub-branch) is also fluctuating amid heatwave warnings in the city.

Delhi’s water needs

Delhi requires about 1,200 MGD of water, while the Delhi Jal Board supplies about 950 MGD. The Chandrawal and Wazirabad water treatment plants have a capacity of 90 MGD and 135 MGD respectively. Two plants pick up raw water from Wazirabad pond, treat it and supply it to Northeast Delhi, West Delhi, North Delhi, Central Delhi and South Delhi including Delhi Cantonment and New Delhi Municipal Council areas.

The city government has now set a target of increasing the water supply to 998 MGD and 1,180 MGD by June 2023 to meet the rising demand this summer.
