Delhi weatherHeavy rains lashed parts of Delhi-NCR this afternoon, bringing relief to the people from the heat. Parts of the National Capital Region witnessed heavy rain and thunderstorms. The city was in the grip of bad weather for the past several days and today’s rain brought respite to those who were seen enjoying the rain.

The Meteorological Department had issued a yellow alert on Wednesday, warning of moderate to heavy rain in Delhi. The city is likely to see generally cloudy sky, moderate rain or thundershowers during the next three days. The minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 28.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 33 degree Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted “increased rainfall activity” over northwest India for two-three days.

The primary weather station at Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi, has recorded 189.6 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 201 mm since the start of the monsoon season on June 1. After a relatively dry June, the capital has recorded 165.1 mm of rainfall above normal. 126.9 in July so far.

But the highest rainfall occurred on the first day (117.2 mm) in July. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 30 mm of rain between 8:30 am on Saturday and 8:30 am on Sunday. However, other weather stations have recorded light to moderate rain on several occasions this month. The IMD uses four color codes for weather warnings: green (no action required), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).
