The prototype of a fully electric bus, which will be inducted into the fleet of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), has come after a long wait. Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot on Sunday took to Twitter to confirm the development and also announced that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will soon flag off the e-bus. The Transport Department is procuring 300 electric buses whose deliveries were to start in November 2020. However, it was postponed due to several reasons including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Gehlot said in a tweet, “Congratulations Delhi! After a long wait, the prototype of DTC’s first 100% electric bus has reached Delhi. CM Arvind Kejriwal will soon flag off this electric bus.”

More electric buses will be included in the DTC in the coming months as part of the bigger plan. About 3,500 new e-buses will be added to the DTC and cluster fleet as per the induction plan of the Transport Department.

The Delhi Transport Department had last year floated tenders for induction of 140 low-floor AC electric buses, with an aim to strengthen public transport as well as check air pollution. Besides this, the DTC board has also approved induction of 1,245 low-floor buses including 1,015 electric buses to augment the old fleet of public transporters in the city.
