A new photo book draws inspiration from the archives of the late French designer Coco Chanel and Hollywood greats – Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe – as they celebrate the life stories of three little-known female personalities in India.
“Derriere la Seine”, translated into English as ‘Behind the Scene’, is a tribute to Chanel and was formally released by veteran actor Neena Gupta on Friday – the 20th century fashion icon’s 139th birth anniversary.
The book features the profiles of educationist Anshumala Gupta, life coach Chitra Iyengar and teacher Neha Nitin Gokhale, with their looks and style inspired by Chanel, Hepburn and Monroe respectively.
“We often hear stories, tales and biographies of people who have made it big in their career of concern. Books are written on them. Movies built on them. They are celebrated. But many stories are not captured, told or documented. These stories are of people who work quietly behind the scenes. Such stories often go unheard and untold,” read the book’s description.
“Through this photo book ‘Derriere la Seine,’ we will celebrate three wonderful yet humble women whose journey needs to be told,” it added.
Chanel, who grew up as an orphan, and would later go on to leave her legacy to the world of fashion and Hollywood through her namesake brand, ruled Paris’s haute couture for nearly six decades.
Her now-classic innovations included Chanel suits, quilted purses, costume jewelery and the ‘little black dress’.
Hollywood icons Monroe and Hepburn were two prominent names in the designer’s journey as they introduced her successful Chanel No. 5 and many of Chanel’s major collections to the mainstream of Hollywood cinema.
Anshumla Gupta said that it was a humbling and unique experience for her to be involved in the book.
“Coco Chanel was ahead of her time, a pioneer and didn’t care about existing norms, traditions or mindset, which is the most inspiring thing about her . . . even on the work I’ve been working for. I have a lot of confidence. These are traits that I feel I share with Coco Chanel,” Gupta writes in the book.
