Cup finalists Freiburg forbade the use of their logo or crest for any joint commemorative merchandise with rivals Leipzig.

Rival fans have long criticized Leipzig as an artificial club whose existence was made possible only by heavy investments from sponsor Red Bull and its co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

RasenBallsport Leipzig eV was founded in 2009, when 77-year-old Austrian billionaire, Mateschitz bought a local fifth-tier team, SSV Markranstaedt, and rebranded it under his new name with the livery of his energy drink company. The company financed the club’s steady promotion through the lower leagues until the Bundesliga in 2016.

They have also benefited from state support. Leipzig’s stadium was formerly the Zentralstadion. It was renamed the Red Bull Arena in 2010 after being modernized for the 2006 World Cup. The club agreed to buy it in 2016.

After losing to Borussia Dortmund last year and Bayern Munich in 2019, Leipzig will play in the German Cup final again this year. They also have a chance to reach the final of the Europa League with a 1-0 lead over Scottish club Rangers ahead of their semi-final second leg. in Leipzig on Thursday.

The final of the German Cup will take place on 21 May at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
