Did BJP force its Asansol candidate Pawan Singh to pull out of Lok Sabha race?

BJP candidate list 2024: A day after the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) announced him as its candidate from the Asansol seat of West Bengal, Bhojpuri actor Pawan Singh decided to drop out of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 due to personal reasons. The development came after the BJP faced intense social media backlash for the choice of Pawan Singh.

“I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from Asansol but due to some reason I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol,” Pawan Singh said in a post on X.

Pawan Singh: A contentious choice

The choice of Pawan Singh from the Asansol seat of West Bengal sparked a huge stir with Opposition leaders targeting the BJP over the Bhojpuri actor’s reputation. The announcement drew immediate backlash against the BJP on social media as Pawan Singh is known for his musical recordings with objectionable references to Bengali women.

The ruling TMC in Bengal cornered the BJP over the choice of Pawan Singh and alleged that the selection displays the saffron party’s disrespect towards women. The discontent grew louder on Sunday and around 1:00 PM, Pawan Singh decided to pull out of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

TMC takes ‘Khela Hobe’ jibe at BJP

Pawan Singh’s announcement to withdraw from the Lok Sabha elections 2024 race drew immediate cheer from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. TMC MLA Babul Supriyo shared a video of Pawan Singh’s interview and claimed that Pawan Singh was all set to contest the Lok Sabha elections and pulled out under pressure from the party.

“Pressure from @BJP4India on him to withdraw citing ‘personal reasons’ !! It’s absolutely impossible that BJP wud name a candidate in their first list without taking his consent or without a detailed discussion with the candidate !! Even today morning we had BJP defending his candidature !! Now they admit it was an insult to Bengali women & Bengali sensibilities, that BJP never ever understood in the first place.. They hv been shown the mirror ! However, I reiterate, I hv nothing personal against Pawan Singh, the artist @derekobrienmp @AITCofficial Sharing a clip of Pawanji interview today morning itself,” Babul Supriyo said in a post on X.

TMC’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee responded to the Pawan Singh decision and said it displays the indomitable spirit and power of the people of West Bengal. Derek O’Brien took the infamous ‘Khela Hobe’ jibe at BJP and said, “This is Khela Hobe even before the khela begins.”
