‘Disgraced Hanuman Chalisa, Lost’: BJP’s Barb on MVA’s RS Loss Reveals Political Subtext Received Spiritual Reading

With cameras flashing, and a small Hanuman Chalisa in hand, Maharashtra BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis recited the sacred Hindu poem while presenting a booklet to independent MLA Ravi Rana, after the MVA was dealt a blow in the Rajya Sabha elections yesterday.

Fadnavis presented Hanuman Chalisa to Ravi Rana.

Rana, whose votes have been asked to quash the Maha Vikas Aghadi – an alliance made up of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress in Maharashtra – apparently carried the Hindu pamphlet while talking to the media during political developments yesterday. He had also reportedly recited the poem ‘101 times’ before the start of the voting. A video of him reciting the Chalisa at his house was also broadcast.

In yesterday’s video, Ravi Rana is seen reciting Hanuman Chalisa.

The text is a sacred prayer to pray and honor the Hindu deity Hanuman. However, the parties in the state now seem to be giving it a political subtext. But how?

There is no need to look too far into the past. The Hanuman Chalisa controversy, barely a month old, hit the headlines in Maharashtra when Ravi Rana and his wife Navneet Rana said they would recite the poem outside ‘Matoshree’, the private residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, prompting the Shiv Sena, Thackeray’s workers got angry. Party leads to tension.

The couple later abandoned the plan, citing the visit of the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi To the city the next day. Apart from IPC 353, Rana was booked under several sections. The police had also imposed section 124-A (sedition) on the independent MLA couple. The couple was granted bail by the special court on May 4.

After coming out of jail, Navneet Rana said that she will continue to ‘fight’ for more religious freedom for Hindus in the state. He had also posted a picture of a small idol of Hanuman in saffron clothes on Twitter.

Now it seems that even Fadnavis has jumped into the symbolism of Hanuman Chalisa. The BJP leader said in reference to the MVA’s Rajya Sabha defeat, “Those who insulted Hanuman Chalisa lost, and those who respected it and fought for it, they won.” He said it was just the trailer, and the picture was not yet fully revealed.

Now it has to be seen how BJP and Rana take advantage of the situation in the coming times.

For now, the BJP is happy with its victory in Maharashtra. While Devendra Fadnavis credits teamwork with careful planning behind this, the recent political controversy may have also taken advantage of the situation in favor of the saffron party.

The BJP had fielded three candidates out of the total six Rajya Sabha seats in the voting held on Friday. BJP candidates – Union Minister Piyush Goyal, former state ministers Anil Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik – fought fiercely, while Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut, NCP’s Praful Patel and Congress’ Imran Pratapgarhi also emerged victorious. The contest for the sixth seat was between Mahadik of the BJP and Pawar of the Shiv Sena, who lost. Mahadik and Pawar are residents of Kolhapur in western Maharashtra.
