New Delhi: After days of fighting to capture the Panjshir Valley, the Northern Alliance appears to have lost the battle to the Taliban. The Taliban have announced that they have taken complete control of the Valley. However, the victory has raised questions about the involvement of Pakistan, which has explicitly supported the Taliban from the beginning.
Zee News Editor-in-Chief Sudhir Choudhary on Monday (September 6) discussed the fall of Panjshir and the role played by Pakistan in it.
Many people around the world expected the Northern Alliance to perhaps take on the Taliban. But now that last hope has been shattered. Many fighters and leaders of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan lost their lives fighting the Taliban.
Some time ago, Iran in a statement expressed grief over the martyrdom of the leaders of the Northern Alliance and said that it would investigate the role of Pakistan in this war. There should be an international inquiry into whether Pakistan was involved in helping the Taliban capture Panjshir.
Fighting was going on in Panjshir for the last several days. Several leaders of the Northern Coalition claim that their fight against the Taliban is still on and they have not backed down.
However, the pictures that have come from Panjshir show that Panjshir has been taken over by the Taliban. Taliban fighters entered the governor’s house in Panjshir, where they hoisted the flag of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
Northern Alliance spokesman Faheem Dashti was killed in a Taliban attack. He was not only the voice of the Northern Alliance but also a very famous journalist of Afghanistan. He had been fighting against the Taliban for many years.
Dashti was also the nephew of one of Afghanistan’s tallest leaders, Abdullah Abdullah, who is currently negotiating with the Taliban to form a new government.
The top leader of the Resistance Front, Ahmed Masood, has said that he will fight against the Taliban till the end. Masood has made serious allegations against Pakistan. He has said that the Pakistani army is helping the Taliban in Panjshir.
Leaders of resistance forces have said that Pakistani drones are being used to carry out the attack in Panjshir.
Since Pakistan cannot send its air force to attack directly, they are using drones. These drones capable of accurately targeting are being used to drop bombs in Panjshir.
Incidentally, Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed reached Kabul on Saturday where he met Taliban leaders. The ISI chief is said to have asked Taliban leaders to give the Haqqani network a bigger role in the new government. The visit certainly raises questions about Pakistan’s involvement with the Taliban.
However, Pakistan has denied that its army was present in Panjshir. But the world knows the track record of the country. Even when the Kargil war started in 1999, Pakistan did not admit that its army was involved for several days. But when India slowly presented hard evidence to the world, Pakistan had to admit that they were lying.
Pakistan is doing the same thing in Panjshir as well. Its footprints are clearly ‘visible’ in the victory over the Taliban’s resistance forces.
