Donald Trump’s son testifies in US Capitol riot investigation

The committee has already spoken to several personalities, including Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

Washington:

Former US President Donald Trump’s eldest son has met with a congressional committee investigating the 2021 attack on the Capitol, US media reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

Donald Trump Jr. was a top figure in his father’s 2020 re-election campaign and one of the most high-profile broadcasters of the defeated leader’s false claims of widespread election fraud.

He accompanies Trump in the Oval Office before the president’s speech at the “Stop the Steel” rally on January 6, 2021, which sparked a crowd that sieges the Capitol as lawmakers were testifying to Joe Biden’s victory.

A source told CNN that the interview, conducted without subpoenas on Tuesday, was conducted via video link for nearly three hours and was cordial, adding that Trump Jr. answered every question and took his fifth of silence. The amendment was not insisted upon.

Trump Jr. texted then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows two days after the election, when the result was still to be determined, with plans to prevent Biden from being certified as the next president.

The committee also highlighted a message from the 44-year-old Republican telling Meadows that there was an insurgency that the then president had to forcefully condemn the violence.

The committee has already spoken to several figures in Trump’s inner circle, including his daughter Ivanka, her husband and top Trump aide Jared Kushner, and Trump Jr.’s partner Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Its seven Democrats and two Republicans plan to hold a series of public hearings in June before releasing a report on the fallout on the rebellion and attempts by Trump and his allies to reverse the election.

Representatives for Trump Jr. and the committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
