However, what has been surprising people lately is the secret behind its huge success and popularity. And filmmaker Kim Ji-won who is all set to release his science-fiction, mystery series Dr. Brain may have an answer. Dr Brain starring Lee Sun-kyun of Parasite fame is the first Korean series to be launched on Apple TV+ platform. Ahead of its global premiere on November 4, the actors and director interacted with their global fans in a virtual press conference and talked about the growing popularity of Korean culture abroad.

Kim Ji-woon, who has already raised expectations with films such as A Tale of Two Sisters and I Saw the Devil, politely answered a question about the secret to Korean pop culture’s worldwide popularity, saying, “I’m sure Not that I’m really the person to point out that secret, but we use the phrase ‘dynamic Korea’ a lot. I believe we have high qualities and abilities as well as the core of Korean culture. There’s that dynamic enthusiasm for that.”

He further explained, “Korean content creators know what can be truly global and their talents and abilities are at par with the global standard. So, the reason for the success is the dynamic nature of Korean content combined with our creative ideas. We call it Dr. Brain. For example, it consists of six episodes, but all the episodes are very closely intertwined, and this rhythm is maintained throughout.”

Based on a Korean webtoon of the same name, Dr. Brain revolves around Siwan, a scientist who is the victim of a horrific personal tragedy when his family falls victim to a mysterious accident. Desperate to uncover what happened, he goes to extraordinary lengths to solve the tragic mystery by conducting a “brain sync” with the dead, in order to access their memories for clues.

Actor Lee Sun Kyun will play the lead role in the series after delivering a memorable performance in the award winning film Parasite. Talking about the interesting plot and how he got into the skin of his character, he said, “The phrase brain sync itself sounds very unfamiliar and strange. So I focused on expressing my response once the brain sync happened. Because brain sync is much more than just receiving memory. Even the feelings and characteristics or habits of the other person are transferred into me which can be a side effect. So the director (Kim) and I shared a lot of conversations on this and we concluded that when people ask what is the closest metaphor of the brain that we can find it was the AirDrop function in Apple devices.

Talking about the impact of OTT platforms on Korean content, Park Hee-soon, who was recently seen in the series My Name, said, “While the previous plays or films premiered in Korea for the first time and had a positive It was introduced overseas only after receiving a response. OTT platform, these content can be simultaneously dropped in every country around the world. This is a great strength in these platforms and I hope to take advantage of this opportunity, we will showcase more Korean content and great K-drama to the global audience and look forward to meeting them through these channels.”
