DRI seizes over 3,600 iPhones smuggled from Hong Kong at Mumbai airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 3600 iPhones smuggled from Hong Kong by declaring the goods as memory cards. According to DRI officials, this is the biggest phone seized by the agency this year.

“The consignment had arrived from Hong Kong at Air Cargo Complex (ACC), Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. In import documents, the goods were declared as “memory cards”. However, physical examination revealed that there were a total of 3,646 iPhone 13 mobile phones in the consignment.” Apart from the iPhone, the DRI also seized an Apple Watch and 6 Google Pixel phones.

According to the DRI, the total value of the confiscated goods is around Rs 42.86 crore, while the declared value of the goods is only Rs 80 lakh.

“iPhone 13 models went on sale India From September 2021, with a base price of Rs 70,000, and some higher-end models priced up to Rs 1,80,000. The import of mobile phones into India attracts an effective customs duty of around 44 per cent.

The DRI said that such a large number of attempts to smuggle these high-end phones of latest models shows how quickly smugglers establish their smuggling networks for latest products like the iPhone 13.

“This discovery has helped in the detection of a serious import fraud, thereby strengthening DRI’s ability to detect and combat unique and sophisticated methods of smuggling,” the DRI said.
