Driving on Velachery Main Road, a nightmare for motorists

The death of a motorist due to a pothole on Anna Salai on Monday is fresh in memory, a daily struggle for motorists on Velachery Main Road.

A stretch of road, which is managed by the Bus Route Road Division of the Greater Chennai Corporation, is full of potholes and potholes, making driving on the road a nightmare. Road cutting at several places by utility agencies including TANGEDCO and Jal Board has made matters worse.

Passing through the old parts of Velachery, it is a busy road as many government offices, commercial establishments and multi-storey apartments lie on the main road.

Motorists face a lot of trouble especially during the rainy season. With rain water being run down the road from buildings, it is impossible to walk on it in the absence of storm water drainage.

A resident of Dhandiswaram Nagar, S. Murthy said going from Dhandiswaram Junction to Vijayanagar Junction was a nightmare as the road was not properly constructed after it was dug up a few weeks ago. He said that only a few months back the road was made new.

Residents of Velachery on Tuesday complained about the poor condition of the road to Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, who immediately deputed a team of senior officials to take steps to repair the road.

A senior official said the road where the water had accumulated has been cleared and a mixture of concrete has been poured to fill the potholes. He said the civic body has proposed to construct a storm water drain on the spot to find a permanent solution to the flood problem next year.
