A drone lifeguard saved the life of a 14-year-old boy in Valencia, Spain, before lifeguards came to his rescue.

“It was a complicated maneuver because of the heavy waves, but we finally managed to vest him and he could swim until the lifeguards got to him with jet skis.”

He also said that these extra seconds “are important in some cases and also allow rescuers to approach the person more calmly and carefully”.

After being rescued, the 14-year-old, who has not been identified, was sent to a local hospital after ambulance personnel provided oxygen. After 24 hours he was sent home.

Valencia-based General Drones began supporting Spanish lifeguard staff in 2017 in the city of Sagunto, north of Valencia.

Now, it has more than 30 pilots and their drones working with lifeguards on 22 beaches across Spain, providing rapid response support in critical moments of potential drowning before lifeguards arrive at the scene.

A total of 140 people died of accidental drowning in Spain in the first six months of 2022, a 55% increase from the same period in 2021, according to the Royal Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Federation.
