Delhi University on Monday directed its colleges to continue the services of existing ad-hoc teachers on normal terms “for the time being” in the academic session 2022-23 till regular appointments are made, officials said. The move comes after the DU Teachers’ Association urged the colleges and departments of the university to renew the appointment of such teachers for the 2022-2023 session. The classes under the new session are scheduled to start from July 20.

“We have asked colleges to continue with all ad-hoc teachers for the time being so that there is no displacement. Meanwhile, we are hopeful that regular appointments will be made. According to the Delhi University Teachers’ Association, the university currently has over 4,200 ad-hoc teachers in 66 colleges. As per the rules of Delhi University, the ad-hoc appointment is made for a maximum period of four months. If the need persists even after four months, a college can continue to serve the teacher after following the prescribed procedure.

The Assistant Registrar of the University has said in a letter to various colleges that regular appointment of teaching staff will take more time. “The University is of the view that as per the guidelines the services of the existing teaching staff appointed on ad-hoc basis should not be terminated or terminated for some time and they should be allowed to continue on ad-hoc basis on normal terms in larger academic interest. Number of students in different subjects/subjects till regular appointment of teaching staff is done,” the letter read.

The university has asked the colleges to follow the instructions. Welcoming the directive, Academic Council member Naveen Gaur said it would help in re-engaging all ad-hoc teachers as the new academic session is about to begin from July 20.
