DU issued new guidelines for college events, said- fest ‘not open to all’

New Delhi: Prior permission from the police, compulsory registration of student attendance and admission with college ID card only – these are some of the new rules being set up by Delhi University to conduct any event in its affiliated colleges.

However, Miranda House principal Bijaylakshmi Nanda told ThePrint that it would not be correct to assume that the guidelines were issued in light of the incidents at the college.

“Since the number of admissions in DU colleges has increased over the years, accommodating all the students has become an issue because of the restricted space. We welcome the move and will encourage the use of large venues such as auditoriums and large grounds for holding open events,” she said.

The guidelines also state that only certain students of colleges/departments affiliated to DU should be allowed to attend the programs to be conducted in any college. “It should not be open to all,” it notes.

Admission will be allowed after registering for the program with the student ID of an affiliated college.

“Deployment of volunteers is also essential at the time of incidents. Hence the number of volunteers can also be informed to the police,” the guidelines further state.

The organizers also have to get permission from the electricity and fire department. The rule also states that the college or department will be responsible in case of any untoward incident.

A student of Miranda House had posted a video on October 15 showing some people climbing the walls of the college to attend a fest organized on the campus. She alleged that the men also resorted to cat-calling, sexist sloganeering and groping.
