The University of Delhi began its year-long centenary celebrations on Sunday by celebrating its Founder’s Day in an event that marked its growth from three colleges in 1922 to 90 colleges at present and in India’s struggle for independence and nation-building. Its contribution was demonstrated.

Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the effect of DU is such that it has reached every home and mind of the country. “You go to any house in Delhi and you will get DU, you go to any corner of the country, any city, you will get DU. In the last 100 years, it has played a huge role in nation building and it will continue to do so in future also,” said Mr.

Outlining the growth of the University in educating women, Mr Singh explained how the strength of female students has grown over the centuries. He said that only 82 girls were studying in the university in 1930, 340 in 1940, 1,737 in 1950 and now in 2022, 3,24,067 girls are studying in the campus, which is more than 50% of the total student strength of the university. ,

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, the chief guest of the event, released a commemorative centenary stamp, centenary coin, centenary section and Delhi University Undergraduate Curriculum Framework – 2022 (Hindi, Sanskrit and Telugu versions). He also launched the university’s centenary website and felicitated Kritika Khichi, a student of Gargi College and the designer of the logo celebrating 100 years of the university.

The Guest of Honor at the event, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that though only a few living universities in the country can claim to be in existence for more than 100 years and Delhi University is one of them. “The University of Delhi is not only an institution that has 90 colleges and has students who have made a name for themselves all over the country. Delhi University is much more than this. It is a feeling, a feeling that is taking the country forward,” Mr Pradhan said.

research-focused approach

The Education Minister said that in future DU will play a major role by producing graduates who are not only job seekers but also job creators.

“DU is celebrating its centenary year in the Amrit Mahotsav of the country. When the country celebrates 100 years of its independence, then DU will celebrate 125 years of its establishment. DU will have to do a lot in the field of research in the next 25 years and establish itself as the incubator of the world offering solutions to global problems,” said Mr. Pradhan. He challenged the university to come up with viable solutions to India’s top 100 problems as well as solutions to mitigate global challenges like climate change.

The Education Minister congratulated the University for being the first to adopt the National Education Policy 2020 and for the initiative to implement the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for Central Universities.

Shri Pradhan also appealed to the alumni of the University to contribute in the future of the University. “DU has very powerful alumni. DU gave everything to its alumni and launched them in the global arena. It is time for them to give back to the university,” Mr Pradhan said while calling for the contribution of alumni to be a model for the country.
