DU prepares to increase fees for academic session 2023-24

Delhi University (DU) will increase its fees for all its undergraduate courses for the academic year 2022-23. According to the news agency, the increase in fees can be attributed to charges under new heads such as revising university facilities and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) aid fund as well as some other components. PTI.

Due New sections like University Facilities and Service Fee, Economically Weaker Section Assistance University Fund and University Student Welfare Fund will be added.

Old fees like University Development Fund have also been increased from 600 900.

An executive of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) estimates that the fee hike may be to the tune of 1000 in annual fees of the students. The university, however, denied that the hike would be to such an extent.

DU South Campus Director told PTI, EWS Support University Fund has been added to the fee structure. They claim that overall there has been no major increase in fees.

“This is a new addition and the money collected under this item will be used by the university for the welfare of the students from the economically weaker sections,” he said.

DU, in a notification dated July 26, said the restructuring has been done to rationalize the fees for admission to various colleges of the university and to ensure uniformity in various items of expenditure.

Delhi University says that there has been no change in tuition fees and Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) fund. Meanwhile, some portion of fees such as College Student Welfare Fund, College Development Fund and College Facilities and Service Charges are to be decided by the colleges.

However, a college principal while talking to PTI said that new clauses like facilities and service charges have been added which were not part of the fee components earlier, but now the university will charge 500. He says that colleges also charge for using their facilities such as lab equipment.

DUTA executive Anand Prakash also says that the university has increased the fee for the University Development Fund. from 600 900.

He adds, “Also, new sections have been added. Fees will increase to at least 1,000. After the increase in the university, the college will also restructure the fees and this will increase the fees further. I don’t understand why the university feels the need to charge for EWS fund when every college has a provision to charge students under this head.”

The new fee structure will have to be approved by the governing bodies of all the colleges of Delhi University. The new fee structure will be applicable from the next academic session i.e. 2023-24.
