Durga Puja 2022: Sindoor Khela is a traditional component of Durga Puja celebrations in the Bengali community. The ritual involves applying vermilion powder or vermilion between the idols of Goddess Durga and married women during the conclusion of Durga Puja on Vijayadashami. Before this the idols are immersed. On the day of Dussehra or Vijayadashami, after ‘Ghat Visarjan’ (a symbolic immersion of Durga that announces the end of worship rituals), Goddess Durga is bid for the year.
Why is it celebrated?
Goddess Durga is believed to be the daughter who comes to earth to go to her ancestral home. The whole celebration of these 5 days is to enjoy and celebrate the return of Maa Durga to her home. Dashami marks the day when she returns to her husband’s home and it is an age-old tradition in the Bengali community to offer vermilion and sweets to their daughters while they say goodbye to him. The application of vermilion is considered as a blessing to strengthen the marital bond of women.
What is sacrament?
Women first perform Devi Baran, where married women bid farewell to the Goddess. After that do aarti one by one and apply vermilion on the forehead and feet of the goddess. Once the goddess is baran, they apply vermilion on each other’s forehead, followed by conch, paula and noa (three bangles made of conch, coral and iron respectively, which represent the marital status of Bengali women). shows). After that, women apply vermilion on each other’s face and carefully apply vermilion. Finally, they feed each other sweets as prasad at the end.
Traditionally, Sindoor Khela is meant for married women who follow a set custom and protocol while playing Sindoor Khela. It is believed that vermilion khela symbolizes the power of womanhood which brings good luck to her and long life to her husband. Presently, this ritual has evolved into a fun affair where unmarried women and men also take a bath in celebration while dancing to the beats of the “Dhaki” drummer.
