Durga Puja heritage status new bone of contention between BJP and TMC

While both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress lauded Kolkata’s Durga Puja festival receiving the UNESCO heritage tag, both the parties took a jibe at each other for claiming credit for the achievement.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, “Two minutes silence for all the big leaders of @AmitShah & @BJP4India who claimed during their pre-poll political tours that Durga Puja is not celebrated in West Bengal. YOUR BIGOTRY AND HOAX IS BUSTED, YOU EXPOSED AGAIN! (sic)”

According to TMC insiders, all top BJP leaders in their speeches had blamed the West Bengal government for preventing people from celebrating Durga Puja. And now that the festival has got the status, it is really a “big slap” on the BJP.

TMC insiders also said that after Mamata Banerjee came to power, she campaigned for Durga Puja and started the carnival, which attracted a truly international audience.

Meanwhile, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar tagged Abhishek on Twitter and said, “Keep an extra 2 minutes of silence for yourself, @abhishekaitc, the proposal was sent by the Modi government. Also, your government tried to ban Durga Puja and now trying to take credit for it by spreading lies.

Basedies, BJP State Vice President Dilip Ghosh asked whether TMC party started Durga Puja in Kolkata or built Howrah Bridge? “They (TMC) are behaving like they have started everything. Why do some people have to go to court for worship? Can anyone answer? They should see that this legacy has been upheld.”

Interestingly, just before the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections on December 19, the tussle between the two parties has started and the issue can also be raised in political campaigns.

PM Modi had described UNESCO’s decision as “a matter of great pride and joy for every Indian”. Mamta Banerjee also said that Durga Puja is not a festival but a feeling.
