Dussehra 2022: Date, Time and Significance of Dashami; 5 sweets to celebrate the festival

We are well into the festive season of the year and celebrating one of the major Hindu festivals across India – Navratri. Navratri coincides with the Bengali festival of Durga Puja, which is marked during the last four days (sixth to ninth days) of Navratri. This year Navratri will start from 26th September 2022 and end today (on 4th October 2022). The next day is marked as Dussehra (or Vijaya Dashami by the Bengali community) which leads to Diwali after a further 21 days.

Dussehra (or Vijaya Dashami) is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. In North India, people burn effigies of Ravana (Ravana Dahan) to celebrate the victory of Lord Rama – it is believed that setting fire to the effigies of the mythical demon also extinguishes our inner demons. Bengalis, on the other hand, celebrate Vijayadashami by immersing the idol of Goddess Durga – which symbolizes sending the daughter back to her home after the holiday.
