Dutch Super Cup: PSV Down Ajax In Eight Goal Thriller

Last Update: 31 July 2022, 22:01 IST

PSV Eindhoven beat Ajax 5-3 to lift the Dutch Super Cup with both giants of the Dutch Eredivisie under new management at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on Saturday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took over PSV in May, while Dutch champions Ajax are now coached by Alfred Schrüder, who succeeded Van Nistelrooy’s former club Manchester United as new manager Erik ten Haag.

Gus Till’s hat-trick with contributions from Cody Gakpo and new teenage recruit from Paris Saint-Germain Xavi Simmons helped PSV secure their 13th Super Cup.

Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn, signed from Tottenham Hotspur this summer for a Dutch record €31 million, opened the scoring after an hour-long quarter, with Til giving PSV a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Ajax were back level on 54 minutes courtesy of their Brazilian winger Antony, before they were dismissed by Gakpo and Till after the third hour.

This meeting of the Dutch league’s biggest rivals lived up to all their hype as Ajax set up a tense end to a brilliant half-volley by Mohamed Kudas.

But Ajax, reduced to 10-man after sending off Calvin Ughelumba, with 11 minutes remaining on the clock, were unable to pull their fight back as Simmons completed PSV’s victory with his fifth goal seconds from the end.

Van Nistelrooy’s first match-in-charge indicated a good start for next week’s Champions League third qualifying round match in Monaco.
